How are characters and lines counted?
Characters are counted as Unicode code points. An emoji or a letter with a separate diacritic may contain several code points. CRLF, CR and LF line breaks are normalized to one LF and count as one character.
The count without whitespace excludes JavaScript whitespace characters, including regular and nonbreaking spaces, tabs and line breaks. A final line break creates an extra empty line. Empty text gives zero in every field.
How are words identified?
When Intl.Segmenter is supported, its word segments use the page language. In other browsers, a word starts with a letter or digit and may contain letters, digits, diacritics and internal apostrophes. The two methods may differ for languages without spaces.
